Westonka/American Red Cross-affiliated Swimming Lessons
We have adapted the American Red Cross program and customized it to fit Westonka Community Education & Services' needs best. It is a comprehensive and developmentally appropriate swim program that teaches all ages how to swim skillfully and safely. The prerequisite for each level is determined by age and successful demonstration of skills from the preceding level. Each level also includes water safety. Each class will begin with a brief skill assessment to ensure that everyone is enrolled in the appropriate level. All students must be able to perform the exit skills prior to moving to the next level. All of our instructors are certified through the American Red Cross. All classes are held at the Mound Westonka High School Pool - please enter through the Westonka Activity Center.
Tiny Hawks Black
Suggested ages 5 & up
Prerequisite: successful completion of Tiny Hawks White. The objective of this level is to build on the basic aquatic skills in previous level by providing additional guided practice of basic aquatic skills at slightly more proficient performance levels and greater distances and time. Skills in this level are performed independently. Children will be taught to improve coordination of combined simultaneous arm and leg actions and alternating arm and leg actions. Exit skills: (skills are performed independently) step from side into chest-deep water, move into a front float for five seconds then return to a vertical position. Move onto back float for five seconds, roll to front then recover to a vertical position. Push off and swim using combined arm and leg actions on front for five body lengths, roll to back, float for 15 seconds, roll to front, then continue swimming five body lengths.
