    Beginning Woodcarving: Wooden Heart Ages 13 - Adult (ages 12 and under allowed with registered adult) Instructor Matt Bruch Everyone loves receiving a handmade gift, especially when it's made by you! This Valentines Day give your loved one a hand-carved wooden heart. This class is geared for the first time carver. It is an introduction to traditional Scandinavian woodcarving. Students will transform a basswood block into a carved and painted heart. We will practice several knife grips to safely and effectively shape the wood. Students will learn techniques for applying paint and a wax finish. Participants are expected to bring their own knife and safety glove to class. Please see the special notes below regarding required tools and how to purchase or rent them. Materials (wood blanks, paint, brushes, and wax) will be provided. Additional blanks will be available for cash purchase in class. Youth ages 12 and under can participate with a registered adult. Sharp carving knife (Flexcut KN14 or similar) 2.     Beginning Wood carving: Northern Cardinal Ages 13 - Adult (ages 12 and under allowed with registered adult) Instructor Matt Bruch Perhaps there is no bird more beloved than the Northern Cardinal. With its bright red plumage, the Cardinal brings a splash of color to our Minnesota winter landscape. A sighting brings joy to all who behold it. Join woodcarver Matt Bruch in creating one to brighten your own home this winter. This class is an introduction to traditional Scandinavian wood carving.     Intro to Hand Building in Clay Instructor Jana Paré, MWHS Art Teacher Do you want to start working with clay but have no idea where to start? Sign up for this six-week beginner handbuilding class and learn the basic skills for creating ceramic sculpture and handbuilt pottery through a series of projects and demonstrations. This class will introduce the three foundational methods of handbuilding: coiling, pinching, and slab building - to provide the base for any project you might imagine. Whether you have ceramics experience or have never touched unfired clay - you are welcome here! Tools, glaze, firings and 25 lbs. of stoneware clay will be provided.     Introduction to Ceramics and the Wheel Instructor MWHS Art Teacher Ms. Paré This hands-on course is designed for individuals with little to no experience in ceramics. Students will experience a comprehensive introduction to working with clay and the potter’s wheel, gaining essential skills in centering, throwing, and trimming. Emphasis will be placed on developing a solid foundation in pottery techniques while encouraging individual creativity and expression. By the end of the class, participants will have created several unique pieces of functional pottery. Tools, glaze, firings, and 25 lbs. of Stoneware Clay will be provided.     Handmade Books Ages 13 - Adult (ages 8 - 12 with registered adult) Instructor Alea Kent In this class, you will make three simple books that can be used for cards, travel, journals, poetry, favorite quotes and more. The accordion book will be augmented with watercolor wash, and can be used for poetry or images. The single signature books can be used for cards, for quotes, recipes and more. The simple stitched book has more pages and can be used as a nature/travel journal, dream journal, for quotes, or general note taking. Directions will be provided for all books so that you can make more on your own. Please bring a scissors, glue stick, pencil, and it you have them, an awl and bone folder. All other supplies will be provided.
