About Early Childhood Screening

Early Childhood Screening is a check of how your child is growing and developing based on their developmental age.

Getting your child screened between the ages of 3 and 4 helps show you areas of strength and any areas of concern in your child's development. This will help your child be prepared for success in Kindergarten.

At your child's screening we will check your child's:

  • vision
  • hearing
  • height and weight
  • immunization status
  • large and small muscles
  • cognitive skills
  • language skills
  • social and emotional development

An Early Childhood Screening is needed for any child starting kindergarten in any Minnesota public school. If your child has been screened by another school district, Early Childhood Special Education, or Head Start, they do not need to be screened again. You can also elect to be a conscientious objector if you would not like your child to be screened. If you would like to be a conscientious object, please contact Sarah Grimm, the Program Coordinator to obtain the paperwork needed.

Early Childhood Screening is recommended for all children between the ages of 3-5 years. The best age to screen at is roughly 3 years 6 months. Its purpose is to affirm a child's development and identify any early needs for educational assistance or community resources. It is a snapshot of your child on that particular day and time, not a predictor of future success. It is also a state requirement in order to attend Kindergarten at a public school in the state of Minnesota. (However, you can choose to be a conscientious objector. To do this, we ask that you contact the Program Coordinator at 952-491-8580 or grimms@westonka.k12.mn.us) This free screening includes a review of all growth and development, immunizations, hearing and vision. Appointments should take approximately one hour to complete and are held at the Educational Service Center, 5901 Sunnyfield Road, Minnetrista in the lower level of the building. Enter on the east side of the building. We ask that you take the following measures prior to your child's screening appointment: Complete all the necessary paperwork prior to the appointment and bring a copy of your child's immunizations record to the appointment. Parents should attend with the child.
