  • Beginning Woodcarving: Fox (Ages 13 - Adult; ages 12 and under with registered Adult)

    Beginning Woodcarving: Fox Ages 13 - Adult (ages 12 and under allowed with registered adult) Foxes are a mysterious and beloved woodland creature. They are featured in myths and stories around the world - often as a cunning and elusive trickster, and yet you can find them right here in Mound if you look carefully. This class is an introduction to traditional Scandinavian woodcarving. Students will transform a basswood block into a carved and painted fox. We will practice several knife grips to safely and effectively shape the wood. Students will learn techniques for applying paint and a wax finish. We will also cover how to sharpen your knife with a strop. Participants are expected to bring their own knife and safety glove to class. Please see the special notes below regarding required tools and how to purchase them. Materials (wood blanks, paint, brushes, and wax) will be provided. Additional blanks will be available for cash purchase in class. Youth ages 12 and under can participate with a registered adult.     Fiber Arts for Beginners with Ms. Bodine Have you ever wanted to get up close and personal with fiber? Maybe you bought wool roving at a craft market, but never learned how to spin it, or saw a wall hanging that you wished you could make yourself. In this class, Ms. Bodine will introduce four fiber art media in the hopes that one of them sends you down a path to your new hobby!     Intermediate Woodcarving: Santa Claus Ages 13 - Adult Ho, ho, ho! Carve your very own Santa Claus ornament in this intermediate woodcarving course with instructor Matt Bruch. This class is best suited for students with some carving experience. Students will transform a basswood block into a carved and painted ornament using traditional Scandinavian woodcarving methods. We will leverage basic knife grips from past courses and examine more advanced techniques for carving refined details. Participants are expected to bring their own knife and safety glove to class. We will cover knife maintenance and sharpening, so bring your strop if you have one. Please see the special notes below regarding required tools and how to purchase them.   • Natural Dyeing with Ms Bodine

    Natural Dyeing with Ms Bodine In this workshop, you will learn how to use plants from your garden or the grocery store to make beautiful one-of-a-kind artworks that are elegant enough to hang on a wall, or practical enough to wear every day. Using silk, wool, linen, or cotton as our base fibers, we will practice both dyeing in a dye bath (all over color) and other techniques such as hammering or eco-printing. Please bring an item to dye as long as they are made out of cotton, silk, linen, or wool (nothing larger than 36”x 36”). Ms. Bodine will have a variety of cotton, linen, silk, and wool items you can purchase to dye.
