Westonka Aquatics | American Red Cross Lifeguard classes Ages 15 and up The American Red Cross Lifeguarding course teaches the knowledge and skills needed to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatics emergencies. Upon completion participants will receive and American Red Cross certification for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR and AED for the Professional Rescuer valid for two years. This course is a blended learning course with online course work to be completed prior to the in-person instruction. * Participants must complete approximately 10 hours of online learning prior to the first in-person class at the Westonka pool. The instructor will email out a registration link to access the Red Cross online content about one week prior to the start of class. Participants must provide evidence of successful completion of the online learning at the first class * American Red Cross requirements to obtain the certification: Must be 15 years of age by the last day of class Evidence of successful completion of the online course work Complete the prerequisites for the Lifeguard training course: 300 yard continuous swim demonstrating breath control using the front crawl/freestyle/ and breaststroke (swim goggles may be used) Complete a timed event within one minute and 40 seconds. Starting in water, swim 20 yards, surface dive to a depth of seven to 10 feet to retrieve a 10 pound object. Return to surface and swim yards on back to the starting point keeping both hands on the object. Exit the water without using ladder or steps. Tread water for two minutes using legs only Must attend and participate in all in-person class sessions Demonstrate successful competency in all required skills and rescue scenarios Pass the CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and Lifeguard Skills final exams with a minimum score of 80 percent. Westonka Aquatics | Junior Lifeguarding Class Ages 11-14 The American Red Cross Junior Lifeguarding program is a transition from upper level Learn to Swim classes to the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program, challenging participants to stay involved in aquatics. Designed to guide youth to the Lifeguard course by introducing and building a foundation of knowledge, attitudes, and skills for future lifeguards. Participants are not required to master or perfectly execute skills. They will learn techniques and build stamina during this program. Participants will be introduced to skills needed for entry into the American Red Cross Lifeguard course, communication and decision making skills, basic responsibilities of a lifeguard and basic knowledge of lifeguarding.
