    Westonka/American Red Cross-affiliated Swimming Lessons We have adapted the American Red Cross program and customized it to fit Westonka Community Education & Services' needs best. It is a comprehensive and developmentally appropriate swim program that teaches all ages how to swim skillfully and safely. The prerequisite for each level is determined by age and successful demonstration of skills from the preceding level. Each level also includes water safety. Each class will begin with a brief skill assessment to ensure that everyone is enrolled in the appropriate level. All students must be able to perform the exit skills prior to moving to the next level. All of our instructors are certified through the American Red Cross. Stroke Refinement: Mighty Hawks Red suggested ages 10 & up $65 Prerequisite: successful completion of Junior Hawks Black. The objective of this level is coordination and refinement of strokes. Participants refine their performance of all the strokes (front crawl, back crawl, butterfly, breaststroke, elementary backstroke and sidestroke) and increase their distances. Flip turns on the front and back are also introduced. Exit skills: perform a shallow-angle dive into deep water, swim front crawl for 50 yards, change direction and position of travel as necessary and swim elementary backstroke for 50 yards. Swim breaststroke for 25 yards, change direction and position of travel as necessary and swim back crawl for 25 yards. Swimming and Skill Proficiency: Mighty Hawks Black suggested ages 11 & up $65 Prerequisite: successful completion of Mighty Hawks Red. The objective of this level is to refine strokes so participants swim them with more ease, efficiency, power and smoothness and over greater distances. This level will also focus on preparing participants for more advanced courses such as the Water Safety Instructor or competitive swimming. Exit skills: swim 550 yards continuously using any three strokes of your choice, swimming at least 50 yards of each stroke. Jump into deep water, perform a survival float for five minutes, roll onto back and perform a back float for five minutes. Perform a feet-first surface dive, retrieve an object from the bottom of the pool at a depth of seven to 10 feet, return to surface to starting point. Stroke Improvement: Junior Hawks Black suggested ages 9 & up $65 Prerequisite: successful completion of Junior Hawks Red. The objective of this level is to develop participants' confidence in the strokes learned thus far and to improve other aquatic skills. Participants improve their skills and increase their endurance by swimming familiar strokes (front crawl, elementary backstroke) for greater distances. Participants add the arms to the scissors kick for the sidestroke. Participants also start to learn the back crawl, breaststroke and butterfly and the basics of turning at a wall. Exit skills: perform a feet-first entry into deep water, swim front crawl for 25 yards, change direction and position as necessary and swim elementary backstroke for 25 yards. Swim breaststroke for 15 yards, change direction and position as necessary and swim back crawl for 15 yards. The objective of this level is to build on previously learned skills by providing additional guided practice. Participants will learn to survival float, swim the front crawl and elementary backstroke. The scissors and dolphin kicks will be introduced and participants will build on fundamentals of treading water. Participants will also learn the rules for headfirst entries and begin to learn to enter the water headfirst from a seated and kneeling position and poolside. Exit skills: jump into deep water from the side, swim front crawl for 15 yards, maintain position by treading or floating for 30 seconds and swim elementary backstroke for 15 yards. The objective of this level is to learn basic personal water safety information and skills, to help students feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely. Elementary aquatics skills are taught at this level. Exit skills: enter independently, using either the ladder, steps of side, travel at least five yards, bob three times then safely exit the water. (Participants can walk, move along the gutter or "swim.") Glide on front for at least two body lengths, roll to a back float for three seconds and recover to a vertical position. (This part of the assessment can be performed with support). Skills in this level are performed independently. Children will be taught to improve coordination of combined simultaneous arm and leg actions and alternating arm and leg actions. Exit skills: (skills are performed independently) step from side into chest-deep water, move into a front float for five seconds then return to a vertical position. Children are introduced to basic skills that lay a foundation to help them learn to swim. Several water safety topics are introduced that are directed to parents. There are no exit skills for this class.
