  • American Red Cross Swimming Lessons - LTS Level 1

    The American Red Cross program is a comprehensive and developmentally appropriate swim program that teaches children how to swim skillfully and safely. The prerequisite for each level is the successful demonstration of skills from the preceding level. Each level also includes lessons in water safety. Each class will begin with a brief skills assessment to ensure that your child is enrolled in the appropriate level. All students must be able to perform the exit skills prior to moving to the next level. All of our instructors are certified through the American Red Cross. All classes are held at the Mound Westonka High School Pool (enter through the north doors).Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills  $65Learn to Swim (LTS) levels are for students ages 5 and up (40 minutes classes)Prerequisite: successful completion of Preschool Level 3. The objective of this level is to learn basic personal water safety information and skills, to help students feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely. Elementary aquatic skills are taught at this level. Exit skills: enter independently, using either the ladder, steps or side, travel at least five yards, bob three times then safely exit the water. (Participants can walk, move along the gutter or "swim.") Glide on front at least two body lengths, roll to a back float for three seconds and recover to a vertical position. This level marks the beginning of true locomotion skills. Participants further develop simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions on the front and back that lay the foundation for future strokes. Exit skills: step from side into chest-deep water, move into front float for five seconds, roll to back, float for five seconds, roll to back, float for five seconds then return to a vertical position. Move into a back float for five seconds, roll to front then recover to a vertical position. The objective of this level is to build on previously learned skills by providing additional guided practice. Participants will learn to survival float, swim the front crawl and elementary backstroke. The scissor and dolphin kicks will be introduced and participants will build on fundamentals of treading water. Participants will also learn the rules for headfirst entries and begin to learn to enter the water headfirst from a seated and kneeling position at poolside. Participants improve their skills and increase their endurance by swimming familiar strokes (front crawl, elementary backstroke) for greater distances. Participants add the arms to scissor kick for the sidestroke. Participants also start to learn the back crawl, breaststroke, and butterfly and the basics of turning at a wall. Exit skills: perform a feet-first entry into deep water, swim front crawl for 25 yards, change direction and position as necessary and swim elementary backstroke for 25 yards. The objective of this level is to refine strokes so participants swim with more ease, efficiency, power and smoothness and over greater distances.This level will also focus on preparing participants for more advanced courses such as the Water Safety Instructor or competitive swimming. Personal Water Safety Exit Skills: swim 500 yards continuously using any three strokes of your choice, swimming at least 50 yards of each stroke. Jump into deep water, perform a survival float for five minutes, roll onto back and perform a back float for 5 minutes.     American Red Cross swimming lessonsParent/Child Level 2$55Parent/Child classes are for children ages 6 months to three years and require that a parent/guardian accompany each child in the water (30 minute classes).The objective of these lessons is to introduce basic skills to parents and children. Parents are taught to safely work with their child in the water, including how to appropriately support and hold their child in the water and how to prepare and encourage their child to participate fully and try the skills. Children are introduced to basic skills that lay a foundation to help them learn to swim. Several water safety topics are introduced that are directed to parents. There are not exit skills for this class. Level 2 is a continuation of Level 1 and is focused on improving Level 1 skills and advancting confidence in the water.
